Where Mice Enter a Home: 3 Places to Check First
Mice can pass through very small openings. Finding an entry route does not always solve the whole problem, but it gives you a useful starting point for inspection and prevention.
1. Gaps around pipes, cables and ventilation
Openings around service pipes, cable entries and ventilation grilles are common routes between the outside and the building. Check where pipes enter kitchens, utility rooms, basements and technical cupboards.
Do not block essential ventilation without advice. During an inspection, the route and the best prevention measure can be assessed in context.
2. Doors, garages and storage areas
A gap below a door, a poorly closing garage door or an opening near a storage room can give mice access. These areas also often contain food, cardboard or clutter that offers cover.
Keep food sealed, remove unnecessary nesting material and note where you see droppings or gnaw marks. Those observations help identify activity routes.
3. Basements, attics and connected voids
Mice may move through crawl spaces, wall cavities and attics before appearing in another room. Hearing activity in one place does not necessarily mean the entry point is directly beside it.
A targeted inspection considers signs, routes and access points together. That is more useful than treating a single visible spot in isolation.
